Homenaje a Rufino Tamayo

We are still unable to quantify Rufino Tamayo’s generosity. It overwhelms us. Those of us who knew him know there is no way we can acknowledge his vast contributions. Tamayo touched many people and improved many lives and will continue to do so through the wisdom of his example.
We are celebrating the presence of Rufino Tamayo (1899–1991) in the history of Mexico, given the extreme impact of his creative influence on so many generations of artists spanning almost a hundred years.
Here we have thirty large sculptures shaped like watermelon slices painted by thirty artists (painters, ceramicists, textile artists) honoring the memory of their beloved maestro. They share their contemporary vision of him with the passersby.
The underlying idea was to add the talent and creativity of noteworthy artists who were his students, admirers, and collaborators to the memory of this unique man we are proud to have known to make him present today in his birthplace and to share the lasting memory we have of him in our hearts.
Tamayo lives because he fills our lives with his most extraordinary creations. One need only leaf through a book, glance at a screen, or close one’s eyes to find him and discover anew his prodigious capacity for creating beauty.
